Bursary Donations In Memoriam

Since the school's founding in 1878 the Queen's community has been committed to providing education for girls that not only prepares them for their future but also provides the wider community with individuals who have shaped and will shape the future for others. The Queen's School, with its core values such as that each girl is recognised for her contribution, provides a rich and varied learning environment with exceptional opportunities in all areas of school life. We are proud of the high moral values and social responsibility embedded in our community that empowers girls from all backgrounds to strive to influences for good in society. We are committed to providing opportunities for more girls to benefit from a Queen's School education. Ensuring a wide balance of interests, skills and ambitions amongst the girls provides all their lives, and our bursary programme has successfully enabled a significant number of individuals to exceed their expectations.

Many alumni are grateful to particular members of staff for the part they played in their education, and donations to the Bursary Fund in memoriam are always gratefully received.

We commemorate the life of Miss Diana M Skilbeck, Headmistress from 1989 to 2001, who passed away on Saturday, 4th March.  We remember her outstanding contribution to education in the country, particularly in her role as president of the Boat Museum Society of Ellesmere Port.

We're commemorating the life of Miss Margaret Farra, Headmistress 1973 - 1989, who passed away on Thursday 19th August 2021 at her care home in Chester. Her funeral will be held at Chester Cathedral on Friday 1st October at 11.30am. All are welcome.

We remember Mrs Marjorie Brien, teacher of Maths, who passed on 16th January 2021 at the ripe old age of 95.

The Queen's community was very sad to hear the news of the passing, on 20th February 2020, of former governor Mr Mark Fearnall. As well as his numerous business, charity, sport and family commitments, Mark served as a governor for many years.

Mrs Valerie Hands (Miss Brown) sadly passed away in Leominster on 18th January 2020.
She will be remembered as an extraordinary history teacher, quietly spoken but extremely knowledgeable. She expected high standards from Queen's girls and reputedly never awarded an 'A' for work: A(-) was the highest mark attainable from her! Apart from conveying a true love for her subject, she also taught how to take quick notes as she spoke - an essential skill in those pre-digital days, but one that was not often explicitly taught.
Many alumni will also remember the excitement of Miss Brown's marriage to Mr Ray Hands (physics) one Friday lunchtime! The fact that they both returned from the Register Office to deliver their afternoon lessons was indicative of their dedication to Queen's girls' education.

Mrs Kirby (Evelyn Wilson)  sadly passed away on 12th October 2019. Mrs Kirby joined the staff of Nedham House after the family moved to Chester in 1964. In her time there she encouraged girls in a variety of art, craft and sewing skills, most memorably potato printing and making winter capes! Many hours were spent potato printing items for the annual Autumn Fairs in order to raise money for the old swimming pool. As a person she looked for the good in everyone and this transferred into her teaching where she praised achievements and was always encouraging.

Miss Jane Chowen, former teacher and headmistress of Nedham House, passed away peacefully at Upton Dene Residential Home on 30th April 2019.

Former Speech and Drama teacher Mrs Anna Mistry passed away on 21st  March 2019 at her home in Chester.
Mrs Mistry was a much loved and respected teacher at The Queen's School. She retired in 2017 having gained the accolade of being the longest-serving member of staff with 47 years of service for five headmistresses under her belt! Joining the school as Miss Stuart in 1971, she taught, guided, listened, advised, encouraged and supported hundreds of pupils during her career.
Mrs Mistry made a difference to the lives of so many girls during her time at Queen's and any donations to the School Bursary Fund in her memory will be gratefully received by the Alumni Office

Miss Elinor Edwards is remembered with great fondness by very many of us.
She passed away peacefully in her nursing home in Wrexham on 20th January 2019.
Teaching at Queen's for the vast majority of her career from the early 1950s until 1988, she was an astute, thoughtful and well-loved maths teacher and deputy headmistress.
We will always appreciate that Elinor was a dedicated supporter of girls' education with a lifelong commitment to the girls of The Queen's School, and Miss June Hargreaves and The Alumni Office are very grateful for memorial donations to the School Bursary Fund.

Miss Shirley Hayes passed away on 17th August 2018.
As well as a pupil at the School between 1947 and 1954, Shirley was a much-appreciated teacher of Domestic Science and Home Economics for virtually her whole career. She contributed to Queen's life in a wide variety of ways - through teaching, extra-curricular activities, her commitment to Living Waters camps and the 'old girls' association, as well as her role in recent years as Class Rep for the 1954 cohort.
Contributions in Shirley's memory to The Queen's School Bursary Fund are very much appreciated.

Mrs Helen Parker (English teacher and Head of English through the 1980s) passed away on Sunday 4th December 2016.

Miss Joanna Goodchild, who was secretary at The Queen's School from 1947 until 1984, passed away at home on 17th February 2016.

Miss Millicent Monck-Mason, who retired from teaching English at Queen's in July 1977, passed away on 25th January 2015 in her beloved Lake District.

We are sorry to announce the death on 27th May 2015 of 100 year-old Miss Florence Osborn, former Head of Maths at The Queen's School.
Flo's funeral took place on 15th June at Holy Ascension Church, Upton-by-Chester and was attended by several representatives of Queen's, both teaching staff and former pupils. We also sent a wreath of flowers in the school colours which was much appreciated by the family.
